In 2786, Johanne, a young German traveller, crosses Italy along an organised route that retraces the Grand Tour. The world she sees is a peninsula reshaped by rising seas: stilt cities across the Po Valley, Adriatic fjords carved into the hills, archipelagos where coastlines once were, a rocky desert around Mount Etna.
Johanne records an audio diary for her sister, but the film’s images are Italy today, portrayed as an open-air amusement park. Aquariums, zoo safaris, museums, beaches and archaeological sites packed with tourists.
The voice from the future overlays these places and fractures them, revealing how the present-day postcard Italy already contains the material signs of the Anthropocene.
